Rich Tyler, Portland Fire & Rescue Monday, September 25, 2023 | 2:55 pm – 3:40 pm There are many factors to consider when calculating construction cost, material shortages, leading times are extending as tendency is showing that cost per square feet is only going to raise. From a united front: project contractors putting a number to the designer’s ideas. Firefighters should be involved early in the process to voice end users’ operational and functional factors. One collective voice of creators and implementers. How would the process look like to get an optimized bottom line? Track B Chronicles of an Architect's Fire Station Ride Along Presenter: Lt. Rich Tyler, Portland Fire & Rescue Co-Presenter: Monica Mancera, CR architecture + design Tuesday, September 26, 2023 | 5:00 pm - 5:45 pm Architects visit fire stations during construction to do punch lists to make sure everything matches the plans. There is huge value on each of these visits but no matter how much time we spend on these visits on designers, firefighters know how the firehouse operates. How would spending 24 hours on a fire station be like for an architect? What would it be like to have a grasp of what a firefighter deals with daily? Will an architect survive a day? FIERO 2023 Fire Station Design Awards Be sure to view the competitors for the 2023 Fire station Design Awards. This year CR architecture + design entered one of our favorite projects, the Blue Grass Airport Public Safety Facility. This ARFF in Lexington, Kentucky was adapted to a sloped landscape in the center of the airport for easy and immediate access to the runways and terminal. The striking center wall is not only an attention getter but a functional part of the structure, dividing the living quarters from the apparatus bays and separating the public accessible spaces from the airport only personnel facilities. Look for our entry boards on display at the symposium. DYK: That by including Training by Design, facilities see a 92% increase in skill development. What is Training by Design? This is our proprietary formula for adding training props and educational experiences directly into the build or renovation of your fire station. Incorporating these advancements enables your team to train 24 hours, 7 days a week. “Building-in” these training stages as a seamless part of the facility enables you to better utilize your space. Perhaps the biggest benefit of Training by Design is the cost savings for the company. Imagine not having to leave the facility to train, not having to backfill staff, and not having to find a comparable learning center, you will have it all under your own roof. The addition of these teaching tools supports more knowledgeable fire fighters, more diversified trained professionals, and often enhances response times and performance. At CR architecture + design we have revolutionized the implementation of these training essentials as a statement of art and design, making the utmost use of your facility. Ask how we can make it work for you! What is Facility SitRep? Are you in the process of assessing the need to replace, renovate, or add on to your current facility? Are you asking yourself where do I start? How do I start? What do I do? Those are the very questions and the very reasons that CR architecture + design established our Facility SitRep. Ask at our booth (Booth #2) for more details on the program.
